Getting Started

The boys were excited about the new adventure that we were beginning. In July we brainstormed lesson ideas, topics, themes, etc. We made a list of supplies and prepared our classroom. Then something happened that I wasn't prepared for. The boys asked if we could start with our lessons...now! I explained that I wasn't fully ready to start yet. I had some pressing issues that I had to take care of. We agreed to start on August 1st.

It is now August 27th, nearly a full month into our school year. We studied a starter unit about dinosaurs. This included a cosmic calendar that demonstrated the history of the universe, dinosaur portraits, and a diorama. Next, we began our unit about geography. Our classroom walls are papered with maps. The boys use the internet to complete quizzes about various regions and navigational skills. As a special project, we have been geocaching. Geocaching is the sport of using a GPS (global positioning system) device to locate a logbook and trinket box left by another geocacher. The cache creator publishes coordinates online which we seek. The boys feel like they are on a real treasure hunt. Truth be known, so do I!
